Barber-Nichols Delivering Liquid Nitrogen Pumps For High Temperature Superconducting Power Transmission Cables

Barber-Nichols Inc. (BNI) is pleased to be delivering liquid nitrogen pumps for High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) power transmission cables. HTS cables can transmit more power than traditional cables eliminating the need for infrastructure upgrades as power demands increase. Additionally, HTS cables automatically contain faults, reduce right-of-way requirements, and electromagnetic field interference.

The pumps BNI delivered cool the HTS cables by circulate nitrogen along their length and are designed to operate both as a compressor and as a pump. Nitrogen gas is circulated during the cooldown phase eventually transitioning to a liquid as the cables reach their 77o K (-321o F) operting temperature.

Barber-Nichols specializes in the design and production of custom turbomachinery including compressors, fans, pumps, turbines, generators, motors, and controllers for aerospace, cryogenic, defense, and energy applications. In addition to custom hardware, BNI also provides engineering consulting and contract manufacturing services.
