Barber-Nichols Wins Navy Submarine Production Program Component Work

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, awarded Barber‐Nichols Inc. (BNI) a multi‐year contract to produce MK 21 air turbine pumps for the Virginia-class submarine program. The contract is for twenty air turbine pumps delivered over a five-year period starting in 2015. The award was based in part on BNI’s excellent past performance producing the air turbine assembly. The new award increases BNI’s scope of work significantly and puts the company into a major equipment integrator role with significant procurement responsibility from its supply chain in addition to sophisticated assembly and test requirements for full assembly.

“We appreciate the trust Newport News Shipbuilding has placed in BNI with this award, and we look forward to a very close relationship that will drive down cost while maintaining the excellent reliability of this mission-critical equipment,” said BNI President Dan Thoren.

Barber‐Nichols Inc. is a privately held specialty turbomachinery business located in Arvada, Colorado, that supplies leading-edge pumps, turbines, compressors, and other rotating machinery along with associated power electronics for submarines, satellites, and everything between. BNI strives to provide enabling solutions that keep its DOD, aerospace, energy, transportation, and cryogenic industry customers generations ahead of their competition.
